Special Olympics Utah hosted its annual Fall Sports Classic on October 16 – 17th. With the addition of golf, this two-day event surpassed our Summer Games as our largest state competition. During the course of the event, more than 900 athletes and Unified Partners from across Utah competed for state in aquatics, basketball, bocce, golf and MATP. Young and old came together after months of training to show the community their hard work, determination and athletic ability.
First and foremost, we thank our volunteer Heads of Delegation and coaches. They donate countless hours mentoring, teaching and coaching our athletes to prepare for these state games. They create a supportive learning environment and support system as each athlete works to accomplish personal and team goals. Many take time off work and travel long distances to be there to support their athletes.
It was a wonderful weekend at the University of Utah and Rose Park Golf Course — and we thank both venues for hosting us.
We are grateful for their long-time support of Special Olympics Utah. Our deepest gratitude goes to our sponsors:
We also thank our in-kind donors including Harmons, Maverik, U of U College of Health, Gold Cross Ambulance, Swire Coca-Cola, Holiday Motor Coach, Panda Express, Bouncin Bins Rental and Design Type Service.
A BIG shout out goes to our Games Organizing Committee. With the support of the University of Utah’s Lowell Bennion Community Service Center, student volunteers spent weeks working with SOUT to plan the Classic. They worked long hours setting/cleaning up and supporting the management of different sports venues, meals, Healthy Athletes, Special Olympics Town and Ceremonies. Thank you GOC!
The athletes and Unified Partners were supported by more than 600 enthusiastic volunteers. They served as officials, athlete attendants, award presenters and more. We thank YOU for donating your time to this event. We recognize our volunteer groups from Adobe, Career Step, Highland High School’s Baseball Team, HopRocket, Juan Diego High School’s Swim Team, Kearns’ High School Latinos in Action, Maverik – Adventure’s First Stop, Pobanz Orthodontics, Price Waterhouse Coopers, Primary Children’s Hospital – Pediatric Education Services, The Presidio Group, Smith’s Marketplace in Ogden, U of U’s Pi Beta Phi Sorority, Utah Transit Authority and Verizon Wireless.
Our Healthy Athletes Clinics would not be possible without the volunteer efforts from local doctors, providers, clinicians and other volunteers who donated their time to provide free health screenings to our athletes and Unified Partners. Our deepest thanks goes to Dr. Lori Hooley who is a SOUT board member, athlete parent and organizer of these clinics.
And finally, thank you FAMILIES! No one gives the type of love, support and encouragement that you can. Thank you for sharing your athletes with us.
SHARE THE LOVE!
Photos of the event are posted (and more will come) on our Facebook page. Be sure to check it out! Tag #specolyutah and share photos to show our community the joy of Special Olympics Utah. You can help us share the mission of Special Olympics which will then help us recruit more athletes, volunteers and donors. It’s through the support of committed individuals and groups that SOUT is able to provide these wonderful events and programming.
